Adrenaline (Epinephrine) Sample Type: 24 Hours Urine

Adrenaline (Epinephrine) – 24-Hour Urine Test (Summary): This test measures the total adrenaline excreted in urine over 24 hours to help diagnose conditions like pheochromocytoma or autonomic disorders. Adrenaline is a stress hormone that affects heart rate and blood pressure. The test involves collecting all urine for 24 hours, often using a preservative, while avoiding stress, caffeine, and certain medications. High levels may indicate tumors or severe stress; low levels may suggest autonomic failure.

Adrenaline (Epinephrine) – 24-Hour Urine Test
Sample Type: 24-Hour Urine Collection

Purpose:
This test measures the total amount of adrenaline (epinephrine) excreted in urine over 24 hours. It is primarily used to help diagnose pheochromocytoma, paraganglioma, and other disorders involving excess catecholamine production.

About Adrenaline:
Adrenaline is a catecholamine hormone released from the adrenal medulla during stress, stimulating the heart, increasing blood pressure, and raising glucose levels.

Indications for Testing:

Suspected catecholamine-secreting tumors

Episodic hypertension, palpitations, or anxiety

Autonomic dysfunction

Investigation of adrenal or sympathetic nervous system disorders

Sample Collection Instructions:

All urine must be collected over a 24-hour period.

A preservative (usually acid) is often added to the collection container to stabilize the catecholamines.

Avoid caffeine, certain medications, strenuous exercise, and stress during the collection period.

Store the container in a cool place (refrigerated if possible) during collection.

Normal Reference Range (may vary by lab):
< 20 µg/24 hours (adults)

Clinical Significance:

Elevated Levels: Pheochromocytoma, paraganglioma, severe stress, hypoglycemia, or stimulant use

Decreased Levels: Autonomic failure or certain medications
